Hotel Sacher Vienna, Vienna, Austria

Hotel Sacher opened in 1876 behind the Vienna State Opera, on the Philharmonikerstrasse. It was founded by Eduard Sacher, son of Franz Sacher, the pastry cook who created the Sacher-Torte in 1832. Almost 150 years later it remains one of the reference luxury hotels in Vienna and is still owned by a family.

History

At the turn of the 20th century the hotel was run by Anna Sacher, Eduard’s widow, who made it a meeting place for the aristocracy, diplomats and artists of imperial Vienna. Its private dining rooms, the chambres séparées, were famous for discreet dinners. The hotel has stayed independent, and the family also runs a sister house in Salzburg.

Rooms and design

The hotel has 152 rooms and suites, decorated with antiques, original paintings and fabrics in the colours of the Viennese tradition. The Rote Bar and the Blaue Bar keep the atmosphere of the old hotel.

Dining

The Café Sacher, with its red velvet and chandeliers, serves the Original Sacher-Torte, still made to the family recipe and shipped worldwide in its wooden box. The hotel’s restaurants serve Viennese and Austrian cuisine.

Weddings and events

Hotel Sacher hosts weddings, private dinners and receptions in its salons, a few steps from the Opera and the Hofburg. Send your date, guest count and occasion through the request form on this page: it goes directly to the events team.
