The Opera House on Lam Son Square was completed in 1900, and the Hotel Continental had already stood beside it for two decades. Park Hyatt Saigon joined them in 2004, at 2 Lam Son Square: a white building with arched windows and green shutters that reads as colonial at first glance, though it was built new. It was the first Park Hyatt in Vietnam, and it holds one of the most central addresses in District 1, next to the Opera House and on the same square as the Continental and the Caravelle.
History
The hotel arrived at a time when international groups were returning to Ho Chi Minh City and the old French quarter around Dong Khoi was being restored. Its designers chose to fit in rather than stand out. The proportions, shutters and white render echo the colonial buildings around the square, so the hotel sits comfortably beside the Opera House instead of competing with it. Rooms and public areas have been refreshed since the opening, while the exterior has kept its colonial revival form. The square itself changed in the 2010s and early 2020s, as the city dug the underground station for its first metro line beneath it.
Architecture and design
Inside, the design mixes colonial references with Vietnamese craft. Lacquer, dark timber, silk and ceramics recur throughout, and the hotel shows Vietnamese art in its public rooms and corridors. The lobby lounge sits at the centre of the ground floor, and the pool courtyard gives the building a quiet core away from the motorbikes outside. The scale is intimate for a city-centre hotel of this size, with no atrium and no sense of a conference machine.
Rooms and suites
There are 245 rooms and suites. Rooms are furnished in a restrained colonial style, with dark wood, pale fabrics and large bathrooms, and many look over the square towards the Opera House. Suites add separate sitting and dining areas for longer stays and for guests who receive visitors.
Dining
Square One is the main restaurant, with open kitchens cooking Vietnamese and French dishes side by side. Opera, the Italian restaurant, looks out onto Lam Son Square. 2 Lam Son, named after the address, is the hotel's bar, and the Park Lounge serves afternoon tea in the lobby. The restaurants draw Saigon residents as well as hotel guests, particularly in the evenings and at weekends.
Wellness
Xuan Spa takes its name from the Vietnamese word for spring and offers treatments rooted in Vietnamese traditions. The outdoor pool sits in a planted courtyard, with a fitness centre nearby.
Weddings and events
The hotel has a ballroom and several meeting rooms, and it hosts weddings, banquets and conferences. The setting beside the Opera House makes it a frequent choice for receptions, product launches and corporate dinners in the city.
Location
Few luxury hotels in Ho Chi Minh City have a more central address. Dong Khoi, the old Rue Catinat, runs along the square towards the Saigon River and is lined with shops and cafés. Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office are around ten minutes on foot, and Ben Thanh Market a little further. Opera House station on Metro Line 1, which opened in December 2024, lies beneath the square and links the centre with the eastern districts. Tan Son Nhat International Airport is about 7 kilometres away, roughly 30 minutes by car outside the rush hours.
